My research explores the antecedents and consequences of human motivation, and is anchored mainly in Self Determination Theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 2000). Currently, my research focuses on four topics: (1) Exploring the effects of supporting and frustrating the need for autonomy in various domains such as academics, bullying prevention and pro-social behavior, (2) Exploring the need for autonomy cross-culturally, (3) Exploring the relations between autonomy, coping processes and intimacy in close relationships, (4) Exploring consequences and antecedents of the socializing practices of parental conditional regard and autonomy support, with a special focus on the development of coping processes and self worth in achievement situations. In addition, I am interested in methodology and statistics, especially in bi-directional effects in social networks.
